Insurance: I do not accept Insurance, Why?
Insurance companies may limit the number of sessions you can have or they will pay for.
Insurance requires a diagnosis in order to justify treatment, this can often lead to insurance fraud and unethical treatment per the ACA Code of Ethics if you do not actually have a DSM diagnosis. This diagnosis can stay on your medical record for life which can be damaging for a variety of reasons and this diagnosis can accessed by Life Insurance companies for example who may deny you.
Insurance companies require detailed session notes and personal information, which can compromise client confidentiality.
Some clients such as military, first responders, pilots, prefer out of pocket services to avoid creating a mental health record that could be accessed in legal or employment situations due to stigma of being "unfit for service" which only perpetuates the cycle of crisis.
Insurance does not or may not cover treatments like couples counseling, EMDR, career counseling or life coaching.
Cost for counselors: insurance payments can be delayed for weeks to months, claims can be denied or audited, and often insurance reimbursement rates are much less than the therapist actually charges.
